Kitchen by Banana YoshimotoThe path of deportment is not easy. It is scattered with struggles andhurdles which we must overcome. A go plant is a good metaphor oflife the flower is soft with a pleasant fragrance but the thorns arprickly and hurt us. Likewise, life has good things like laughter,happiness, hope but it also has some things that hurt us, obstruct us.In Banana Yoshimotos novella Kitchen, Mikage Sakurai faces quandariesin her life which halt her. However, she fights them back with hopeand aspiration. She is aided by the Tanabes who help her to fighther dilemmas and struggles. Each character displays a sense ofoptimism, a hope for survival and the determination to fight back. Ina greater sense, this interpretation gives the reader a moral teaching thatdespair does not necessarily result in annihilation. They deform to tellus that we must not give up in our lives, come what may. They appearas teachers giving us a lesson how to lead our lives. This renderingmakes us fee l close to them and think of them as our own friends. Thismakes them interesting and moving.Mikage is a loner. Throughout her life, she has felt separated fromothers and feels solitude. She says that condescension all the love thatsurrounds us, we are separated by others physically and mentally whichmakes each one of us separate, alone. She has suffered great lossesshe has lost all her family members. However, after moving into theTanabes apartment, she becomes anticipative for a better life. Mikagewonders Wrapped in blankets.in the future on page 16, that maybeshe hadnt wished for all the loneliness, maybe she had been hoping tothink about the future. Here, Mikage reveals the fact that she had totally ignored... ...he darkest of moments and in our momentsof despair, we must try to laugh and cheer ourselves. It is a way tobecome optimistic.In conclusion, this story is of great value to any reader because itportrays a real life story. The characters appear very real to usbecause o f their simplicity and unusualness. This makes us endearingto these characters, we feel attached to them, sympathy towards them.Each character contributes to a greater understanding of thedefinition of life and the way to live. Each character is determinedthat they would not fail, they would not give up they would continueto fight on despite any barrier, any resistance. They teach us thatdeath is not the end of despair, there are several others way to liveon despite being clouded by darkness and uncertainty. This makes thereader respect the characters and feel close to them.
